The second book in the series picks up exactly where Quarter Share left off. Ishmael transfers from the galley to environmental. He also starts to come to terms with women and relationships with such.As in the first book, there is no imminent danger and there are no action scenes. Mr. Lowell has a knack for making ordinary pursuits interesting, but his dialogue flirts with cheesiness rather too often. The second half of the book is a departure. In no time flat, Ishmael goes from normal uncertainI liked it, but not as much as the first one. There was a little non-graphic sex thrown in, but other than that the book was remarkably similar to the first one. That made it not exactly boring, but a little uneventful. The only new major character, Sarah, could have been explored more. Her story was hinted at, but around mid-book she just drifted into the background and all but disappeared.I still enjoyed the book and chances are high that in a few books along my TBR pile I will get the next
These books have a strange fascination even though not a lot actually happens. The big story in this book is Ishmael seems to become every womans fantasy Sex object. This would have been OK if it had been a part of bigger story, but it was the whole last half of the book. If possible I would have given 2.5 stars.
The tale of Ishmael Horatio Wang continues in the second installment of the six-part space trade saga. In "Quarter Share" we saw Ishmael prove himself a wonder child aboard the small freighter SC Lois McKendrick. Now he has studied and progressed from a deckhand into an actual crew member, and it's time for a re-evaluation of identity, it seems.I found "Quarter Share" well written but a bit fluffy, and the Mary Sue -grade perfectness of the protagonist was really getting to me. "Half Share" is
Such lovely mental bubble gum.The story suddenly turned a lot more racy. Love interests EVERYWHERE. More fashion than I had expected from a merchant trader sci-fi, but I'm not really complaining. It's a lovely story, with well fleshed out characters. And the author narrates his own free podcast version on Scribl, which I very much appreciate. And he does a damn good job of it too. I was already half way through the third book before realizing I'd not yet marked this one as done.
Half Share by Nathan Lowell is the continuation of the story of Ishmael Wang, a young man forced into the merchant space service during the Golden Age of the Solar Clippers. In this installment Ish is moving up in rank and moving away from the cozy confines of the galley, and his comfortable friendship with Pip and Cookie, into the environmental section. There, in the dank underbelly of the Lois McKendrick, stale air and dirty water mix with new found camaraderie and suppressed passions to keep
First book was really engaging, but this one read like a Horatio Hornblower letter to Penthouse and didn't grab me at all.
