Appraise About Books Questa notte mi ha aperto gli occhi
Really a 3.5, but of course goodreads won't allow that. I loved the Moz quotes at the beginning of each chapter. Whoever owned the paperback before I got it wrote a note in pencil on the first page about how they finished the book on the tube late one night and they too enjoyed the quotes. I think Coe is at his creative peak currently and I as I move backwards his stuff is still good, but not as great.

Not his best

When Jonathan Coe was a young novelist still undecided between biographies and novels he has written this strange book.At that time Coe was clearly fascinated by The Smiths records, in fact all the chapters of The Dwarves of Death take their name from a Morrissey & co. song. Not to mention the italian translation of this book "Questa notte mi ha aperto gli occhi" which means "This night has opened my eyes"...Uhmmmm.What about the novel? It speaks about copycat killings in London. It shows a

Early work by Coe that is pretty disappointing as it feels like an early book all too often as Coe delivers an uneven tale about a unknown musician in the late 1980s in London who gets entangled in a murder by a pair of dwarves beat a guy to death. Considering that is at the very start of the book and then we wind our way to how that night came about, there is very little tension in THE DWARVES OF DEATH. Also, Coe introduces topics or ideas and then goes nowhere with them, unsure if that it is

Probably the most interesting plot of Jonathan Coe's early novels, but WHAT IS UP WITH THAT ENDING!!! In the end, the characters seemed more one-dimensional than they appeared initially. I was hoping for the depth that characterizes Coe's other work, but it didn't quite get there. The book was never laugh out loud funny as some of his other works are, but it still intriguing enough to follow. Oh well, at least I've finished with reading all of Coe's novels.

A three hour read, quite fun but more a sketch for a novel than the real thing.
