This is a horror/SF story with a twist at the end, which became a trope later but quite likely started here.The story starts with an ominous Bear in mind closely that I did not see any actual visual horror at the end. While most casual readers of Lovecraft, and even many readers who only visit the horror shelves of our collective library in October, will recognize great Cthulhu and maybe even the Necronomicon of the mad Arab Abdul Alhazred, it takes a more dedicated and learned reader of HP to have a familiarity with his 1931 novella The Whisperer in the Dark.This should change because this quiet, pensive and brooding work not only demonstrates much of what is best in his writing, but also exhibits much of

He certainly packed a lot of ideas together that I don't normally associate with the Cthulhu mythos such as Pluto (discovered in 1930 while this was published in 1932), minds in cans & connected to the world via peripheral devices, along with all the horror. His descriptions of the Vermont countryside put my in mind of both Washington Irving & Stephen King although they described different places in New England.I didn't care for the loss of evidence. My favorite Lovecraft tale because this takes place in Vermont. Not only that, one of the few writers I feel that actually gets Vermont and doesn't have a tourist feel. Oddly, I felt right at home reading this story. I mean, it mentions the Rutland Herald (a local paper I see daily). I also like this one because it was creepy. Not really a fan of horror writing, but Lovecraft hits the spot.
3 and ½ stars. Slowly breaking out of my reading slump. This was interesting to say the least. The beginning and the middle were awfully slow, but boy did the end pick up the pace. Glad I stuck through reading. Though not as good as Call of the Cthulhu, I am amazed at how HP pulled this one off. Although I really disliked what I saw as purple prose in the middle of the novella; where he describes the scenery of Vermont, which almost needlessly drags the scene on.
This, to me, is the stereotypical Lovecraft near his worst. The absolute worst is when he has a character detailing dreams. But this? This comes very close.When you get right down to it, nothing really happens throughout this story. The narrator details a few letters, eventually makes his way to the letter writer's home, we're told of some of the secrets he learns from Akeleynever ever shown, because that's simply not how Lovecraft rollsthen the narrator gets creeped out, makes a weird
