I really enjoyed this murder mystery, a step up from Brightwell's previous outings for Inspector Witherspoon, his housekeeper Mrs. Jeffries and the staff of Upper Edmonton Gardens. This time there are more suspects than anyone can cope with. It seems everybody wanted to kill the victim, even his own daughter!When a horrible old man, Mr Roland Ashbury, is found shot through the head in his own house just moments after he's had tea and walnut cake with somebody, the list of suspects is larger thanThis book in the Mrs. Jeffries series has by far been my favorite one. This plot had no lack of suspects and I was going back and forth there for a while before I settled on who actually did it. I like how this story focused more on how Wiggins, Hatchet, Luty and Mrs. Goodge sussed out clues where as in the past it's been mostly Betsy and Smythe. I know that this is a long running series so it's nice that Emily Brightwell continues to find a way to keep our favorite characters interesting and

Thank goodness for Inspector WitherspoonThe collector's households done it again. The story had me fooled. My suspect was all wrong, but when Mrs. Jefferies explained s, it all makes sense. This one had me one the edge of my seat.
A horrible man is murdered, and everyone who knew him despised him and had motive to do the deed. It's up to Inspector Witherspoon to solve the case, but he, as always, gets an assist from his household staff. These Victorian mysteries are a good choice for those who enjoy a mystery without the excessive violence, sexual innuendo, or foul language that is common in mysteries with modern settings. Rather reminiscent of Agatha Christie though not as stellar as those classics written by the grande dame of British mystery.
