Sometimes I get the feeling that he is friendly and easy-going, compassionate and kind, and really interested in people in general and persons in particular ... but I know that he is deeply brilliant, and I would say something ridiculous that I would turn over and over in my head

Just love all Steinbecks writing.He seems to have deeply studied human nature andportrays it in his incredible stories with remarkablecharacters in a very philosophical way.Good stuff!
2.5 StarsI consider myself a Steinbeck fan but I definitely did not like this one as much as his other work. I found this book to be a departure from his earlier work and it lacks the charm and endearing quality of his novels from the beginning of his career. I found this painfully boring although it did interesting things with the exploration of themes of America and its descending morality. I couldn't get into it and did not connect to the characters. I felt no sympathy to Ethan Hawley at all.
Update -- reread Jan 2020. I found the book to be even better on a second read. This time I really picked up on the details of life in the time and place, and I got into the thoughts of Ethan more.Steinbeck has a BEAUTIFUL mind. He makes me think, and cry. He is masterful -- telling stories through rich and interesting characters. He illustrates the hard parts of life by showing us how we feel when those things happen. He makes the reader question their own responses to the things that happen
