Assess Out Of Books Il ritorno di Casanova
Another Schnitzler book I read while looking for Traumnovelle. I liked this better than La Ronde. Casanova as a pathetic old man looking to make a comeback is a great source for both humor and drama. On the nature of sexuality and its contrived relationship with the human psyche, Schnitzler was clearly ahead of his time.

Casanovas return to Venice was a joyous read. The story of the aging Casanova and his efforts to return to Venice is intriguing and entertaining. Arthur Schnitzler gives us a deep insigh to his Casanova, his desires and psyche. It made me want to read more of his stories.

So this is what intellectuals produce when they seek to create an escapist piece "just for fun"... A wonderful, oddly vivid glimpse into another time. Loved it.

Few writers understood better than the Austrian Arthur Schnitzler (1862-1931) how easily desire becomes perversion and folly. Anyone who has seen Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut," which was based on Schnitzler's "Dream Story," knows something of Schnitzler's dark obsessions. In this work, "Casanova's Return to Venice," an aged Casanova is allowed to return to the city he fled from several decades earlier, in part to spy for reactionary forces he secretly despises. In the course of his return, he stays
