Description To Books United States: Essays 1952-1992
From the age of Eisenhower to the dawning of the Clinton era, Gore Vidal’s United States offers an incomparably rich tapestry of American intellectual and political life in a tumultuous period. It also provides the best, most sustained exposure possible to the most wide-ranging, acute, and original literary intelligence of the post—World War II years. United States is an essential book in the canon of twentieth-century American literature and an endlessly fascinating work.Rating Of Books United States: Essays 1952-1992

I took my time with these essays, which, given the nearly 1300 pages, was probably a good idea. While they were written to stand alone, the essays can sometimes seem repetitive, taken together. Still, it's Vidal's gift for expository as well as narrative prose that makes him the premiere author of his generation. His voice is truly a comfort, often insightful. An indispensable collection of essays from the finest man of letters in modern America. The late Gore Vidal wrote the first essay in this mammoth tome (over 1300 pages long) in 1952 and the latest came in 1992, the year it was published. Using his trademark caustic wit, love of history, and the unique relationship he seemed to have with America and even some of its leaders, he charts American culture, history, literature, politics, economics and society.
This superb collection confirms Vidal as a modern Montaigne, the best essayist of the 20th century. My personal favorite: "Pink Triangle and Yellow Star," surely one of the wittiest and most malicious pieces of polemicism ever penned.
Getting straight to the point: this is the single greatest collection of essays available in the English language. That's even if one counts the various English translations of Montaigne's The Complete Essays. These essais demonstrate in large part why Vidal was, along with Edmund Wilson, America's greatest man of letters since Twain.
Fab book from witty essayist. One of the best writers of of this last century. That would be the 20th. Knows the Ancients, their writings and what connects them to us like neighbors down the block. And that's not even the tip of the historic iceberg which covers Many chapters on three states. The State of Art, the Union, and Being.
I love Gore Vidal's essays. If I were going to be stuck on a desert island for a year and I could only take one book, this might be it.His language, wit, sarcasm, insight are second to none (ok, perhaps a slight exaggeration if you throw in Shakespeare). Like Orwell, when you read a Gore Vidal essay on some subject you have absolutely no knowledge of, he draws you in completely. His political connections and insights are fantastic. He anticipates so much. You read essays that are brilliant and
