to be fair, i still have 100 pages left in this book. but i'm so insanely crazy about it that i'm going to do the stupid thing and post about how much i love it.the design of the book itself is so beautiful that it makes me want to smash all ebooks with a hammer. gold-trimmed pages, a red cover that my fingers can't stop touching, pages just thin enough to remind me of church without freaking me out.
but beyond that, novy's words are enough to buy this book, even if it were printed on trashed pieces of cardboard. he's a master at combining the surreal (men who can control birds) with a plot that's so well-paced, i can't stop reading it. gypsies, modern jokes, oklahoma and hungary all exist together here, and i didn't question it. novy has created a world in this book, and i love it.
even better, novy is a master of slipping in lines that will break your heart or make you laugh.
heartbreaker (as a woman gives birth):
Get over there and be ready, she gasped, he left her side, and bent before her womb, her throat felt shredded, she wouldn't need it anymore, she pushed, she pushed, oh God, there it was, her husband had it, he lifted it, Slap it like I told you, he slapped it. there's tension everywhere here, and it's partially created by a narrator who mysteriously keeps using the word "we," as if all of society is leading you through the story. i can see why this might be an issue for some - where did this narrator come from? where did the narrator/s get their information? etc. - but i bought it, hook line and sinker.
there's a lot at work here - wars, humor, heartbreak. this book has a pulse. and reading it makes me excited about writing again.

The ending infuriated me mostly because I feel it was sort of a Diabolus ex machina. The ideas, prose, and flow of the story were definitely engaging, smart, interesting, unique, fun, etc. The physical construction of the book lends much to the aesthetics of reading the story. But that ending! I swear, it must be the result of a corrupted text. I'd like to see the hidden gospels which must have been written around the same happenings, because I'm sure we'd get a better view from a different
The Avian Gospels Book 1 is a rather dark, dystopian tale of town invaded by birds after the town had concluded its war with the Hungarians.
